How returns are calculated

Each trade uses the midpoint of that day’s high and low. Buy quantities are rounded down to whole shares at the time of purchase. Splits adjust those quantities; reported dividends are credited to cash on the ex-dividend date. Fees, tax, and cash interest are excluded.

Sale proceeds remain in cash. A purchase uses available cash first, with an assumed deposit covering any budget shortfall. Returns are calculated per portfolio unit so these assumed deposits do not count as gains. The comparison is the S&P 500 Total Return index in USD. The return difference uses the last date available for both series; missing benchmark days are omitted.

Unconfirmed details: January 4, 2021 is used for the initial January purchase; August 19, 2024 for the VOO/Palantir switch; and GOOGL for Alphabet. The owner has since set the Palo Alto purchase to August 5, 2024 and corrected the first Nebius purchase to February 10, 2026.

Daily history is provided by Yahoo Finance. The current trading session is excluded. Updates are requested on visits after the hourly cache expires; the portfolio date is the last closing date available across current holdings, not a live intraday quote.

The decisions

Every position has a story

The portfolio started with a broad index fund. Over time, I moved toward individual companies as my interests changed. Here are the most recent decisions in my own words.

2026-09-22 · AVGO

Bought Broadcom

A JPMorgan report made me think more about whether custom AI chips could gain ground on GPUs in 2027 and 2028. Broadcom looked well placed for that possibility, and I felt its share price did not reflect the earnings and growth I expected.

2026-07-27 · META

Bought Meta Platforms

I had watched Meta for a long time. Its share price and valuation looked low to me relative to its earnings and growth prospects, especially given how many people use its products. I also saw potential in the AI services it might build for that audience.

2026-07-20 · RKLB

Bought Rocket Lab

Rocket Lab's share price had dropped from its high and looked more reasonable to me. I believed space technology would become a bigger market, with interest in SpaceX and a possible IPO drawing more attention to it. I liked the possibility of Rocket Lab growing alongside SpaceX as another major player.

From an index fund to my own ideas

I began in January 2021 with VOO. I had heard that index funds were a safer place to start, and I wanted to get into investing. Microsoft and Google came next: two businesses I believed would still be important years later.

Nvidia changed what I was looking for. I became interested in the growth of GPUs and AI infrastructure, then bought Broadcom for another angle on that theme. As I grew more comfortable choosing companies, I sold VOO in two stages. The second sale helped me buy Palantir, which I saw as a way to invest in AI and data applications.

Since then I’ve followed ideas in fintech, neocloud computing, marketing, space, and cybersecurity. Sometimes I add when my conviction grows; sometimes I sell when the price or the business no longer fits my view. The full trade story records what I was thinking at each step.

Positions I have closed

VOOVanguard S&P 500 ETF

January 2021 – August 2024

I moved toward individual companies, selling half in 2023 and the rest when I bought Palantir.

CRMSalesforce

July 2024 – June 2025

Its results fell short of what I hoped for, so I put the capital to work elsewhere.

PANWPalo Alto Networks

August 2024 – July 2026

I still liked cybersecurity, but its share price had risen beyond what I was comfortable paying.
